Association between the serotonin transporter polymorphism (5HTTLPR) and subjective happiness level in Japanese adults

چکیده
Background: An epidemiological study in the USA recently reported that variations in the serotonin transporter gene-linked polymorphic region (5HTTLPR) can influence subjective well-being or happiness; specifically, individuals with long polymorphisms (L-allele carriers), associated with increased serotonin reuptake activity, reported significantly higher levels of life satisfaction compared to individuals with short polymorphisms (S-allele carriers). It is empirically known that an international discrepancy in subjective well-being exists, which may be linked to findings that the genotype distribution is different in the USA and Japan. Thus, we investigated the association between 5HTTLPR and happiness in Japan to examine whether geographical heterogeneity of well-being could be partly explained by variations in 5HTTLPR.

Correlation of serotonin transporter gene polymorphism with temperament in Persian medicine
Background: Despite its effectiveness, there are still many concerns and questions about the principles and therapeutic methods of traditional medicine (TM). In other words, in order to accept TM as a reliable health care system, its proficiency need to be declared through modern scientific research. One of the major determinants of Persian medicine (PM) which is practically utilized in disease...
متن کاملSerotonin transporter gene polymorphism modulates inflammatory cytokine responses during acute stress
Cytokines are important mediators of various stress-related modulations of immune function. A major genetic factor determining inter-individual differences in stress reactivity is polymorphisms of the serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5HT) transporter (5HTT) gene. A short (S) variant, compared with a long (L) variant, of the promoter region of the 5HTT gene-linked polymorphic region (5HTTLPR) has...
متن کاملAssociation of STin2 VNTR Polymorphism in the SLC6A4 Gene with Increased Risk of MS Disease
Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that is characterized by inflammation, demyelination and axonal injury. Although the etiology of MS disease is still unknown, many studies suggest that immune system dysfunction plays an important role in the pathogenesis of this disease. The serotonin serves as a mediator between CNS and the immune sys...
متن کاملCandidate genes for aggression and antisocial behavior: a meta-analysis of association studies of the 5HTTLPR and MAOA-uVNTR.
Variation in central serotonin levels due to genetic mutations or experimental modifications has been associated with the manifestation of aggression in humans and animals. Many studies have examined whether common variants in serotonergic genes are implicated in aggressive or antisocial behaviors (ASB) in human samples. The two most commonly studied polymorphisms have been the serotonin transp...
متن کاملPS161. Association study of polymorphism in the serotonin transporter gene promoter, methylation profiles, and expression in patients with major depressive disorder
The serotonin transporter (5HTT) may be associated with the pathogenesis of major depressive disorder (MDD). The 5HTT-linked polymorphic region (5HTTLPR) genotype may determine how levels of 5HTT mRNA are influenced by promoter methylation. We examined the association of 5HTT gene methylation, which influences gene expression, and the 5HTTLPR genotype before antidepressant treatment and express...
